"Light" is an important motif in Ding Yi's "overlooking" stage of creation, creating a spiritual "light" through the contrasting colors. Ding Yi expands is own understanding of light to the spiritual level, which is different from the interpretation in nature.

The artist first covers the wooden panel with hemp or linen fabric, then applies multiple layers of lacquer before finally polishing the surface. This process allows the hidden colors beneath to emerge almost unintentionally, creating a composition where chance and necessity coexist.

The work is first coated with a thin layer of lacquer, followed by mixing lacquer with clay for the second layer. Pigments are then added layer by layer while the surface is repeatedly sanded, leaving traces of the upper layer and revealing the hidden colors beneath. The lacquer embeds itself into the work as if through sedimentation or erosion.
