Introduction

At the dawn of the twentieth century, Guangdong, by virtue of its proximity to Hong Kong and Macao and its position at the forefront of maritime trade, became one of the foremost sites of encounter and exchange between Chinese and Western cultures. This land not only nurtured the pioneers of epochal change but also catalyzed the surging tide of Chinese art’s modern transformation. The permanent exhibition at the Guangdong Museum of Art, Reform Mission: Exhibition of Centennial Fine Arts in Guangdong (1900–1978), offers a systematic review and profound reflection on this historical journey.

Centered on the theme of “Reform Mission,”the exhibition brings together over 400 major works and precious archival documents to present, in a panoramic fashion, the pioneering explorations and historical responsibilities of Guangdong art in the course of modernisation. The exhibition is structured into six progressive and clearly articulated sections, namely, “Reform and Innovation,” “Pioneering the Tide,” “Daggers and Spears,” “The Red Chapter,” “A New Look of the Land,” and “Masters of the Nation”, which together trace the century-long trajectory of Guangdong art: from the brush-and-ink revolution of the Lingnan School and the introduction of Western learning through the Western Painting Movement, to the revolutionary outcry of the New Woodcut Movement, and onward to the heartfelt portrayal of the people’s image and the landscapes of construction in New China’s art. The exhibition fully reveals the original aspiration and commitment of Guangdong artists, who have always embedded their individual creativity in the destiny of the nation and responded to the challenges of their times through art.

The exhibition assembles classic masterpieces by a whole generation of leading artists, including Li Tiefu, He Xiangning, Gao Jianfu, Chen Shuren, Gao Qifeng, Lin Fengmian, Guan Liang, Fang Rending, Situ Qiao, Zhao Shao’ang, Li Hua, Wang Zhaomin, Hu Yichuan, Li Xiongcai, Guan Shanyue, Lai Shaoqi, Liao Bingxiong, Huang Xinbo, Gu Yuan, and Yang Zhiguang. An immersive digital gallery is also included, employing cutting-edge technology to carry the audience across time and space, enabling a vivid experience of the innovative spirit of the Lingnan School and the visual epics of the nation-building period. These works are both bold explorations of artistic language and vivid testimonies to the spirit of their times, embodying the unique cultural character of Guangdong art: daring to pioneer, embracing diversity, and keeping close ties with the people. It is our hope that this exhibition will not only provide valuable historical experience for contemporary art creation, but also inspire the vast community of literary and art practitioners to carry forward the spiritual lineage of “reform mission” and contribute to building a culturally strong nation.
