Introduction

This exhibition departs from the concept of “seeing” in the history of Western art, proposing that viewing is not merely a visual act, but also a means through which human beings comprehend existence, time, and memory, and reposition themselves within the world. The significance of contemporary art lies in its capacity to continuously expand the possibilities of perception, allowing viewers to re-encounter the complex and subtle relationships between light, objects, human presence, nature, and memory.

The exhibition brings together multiple interconnected artistic trajectories, forming a contemporary artistic landscape defined by a shared sensibility rather than a singular style. While many of the works are grounded in figuration, they are imbued with a poetic and lyrical quality. Their restrained compositions and measured rhythm evoke a sensibility closer to the cultural atmosphere of the Mediterranean, transforming the act of viewing itself into a process of temporal sedimentation.

Within these works, “light” is reinterpreted not simply as a condition of illumination, but as a medium that structures perception and experience. “Nature,” meanwhile, no longer appears as an untouched landscape, but as a reality continuously reshaped by modern life and industrial civilization — a complex terrain where beauty and contamination, authenticity and mutation coexist. At the same time, the image ceases to function solely as a tool of representation; instead, it is situated within mechanisms of generation and structures of viewing, revealing layered dimensions of time, memory, and culture. On a deeper level, the exhibition further extends its inquiry toward the relationship between life and non-human existence, as well as between form and spirituality, prompting viewers to reconsider humanity’s position within the world itself.

Initiated by the Guangdong Museum of Art, the exhibition continues long-term engagement with contemporary art research and international exchange. Situated within Lingnan—a region shaped by multiple cultural intersections the project seeks to construct a more open space for dialogue, while reconsidering the meaning of art and perception within the contemporary condition.
