Introduction
In an era of rapid transformation, how can art remain rooted while reaching toward distant horizons? This exhibition is structured into five thematic sections — “Ode to the Sunflower,” “Song of Refinement,” “Reframed Screens,” “Collective Vision,” and “Mountains in Memory” — offering a comprehensive presentation of Xu Jiang’s spiritual world and artistic trajectory. “Sunflowers” and “mountains” form the two central threads of Xu Jiang’s artistic practice, carrying his profound reflections on life, history, and the spirit of the times.

The “sunflower” embodies the collective memory and spiritual journey of a generation, constructing a sense of historical gravity and existential depth between the individual and the collective. The “mountain,” by contrast, represents a spiritual journey across literature, history, and nature, establishing an emotional connection between humanity and the world. Though rendered through distinct visual vocabularies, both motifs confront the challenges posed to painting in the age of images, while continuing Xu Jiang’s philosophical inquiry into “humanity” and “place.”

Looking back on nearly four decades of artistic practice, Xu Jiang has consistently upheld a calm yet unwavering creative conviction, confronting both his era and the land with a classical artistic spirit. This commitment transcends stylistic categories and artistic schools, rooted instead in his enduring observation, contemplation, and sense of responsibility toward the local landscape and contemporary society. Presented by the Guangdong Museum of Art, “Sunflowers and Mountains — Xu Jiang Art Exhibition” offers a systematic exploration of the artist’s creative evolution and inner world. Through these works, viewers are invited to experience the profound power of art and reflect together on how art may remain grounded while sustaining distant aspirations in an age of constant change.
