Introduction
“It is my parents who gave me life, but it is Xu who truly understands me.”
In 1956, three years after Xu Beihong’s passing away, the 92-year-old Qi Baishi visited Xu‘s family to pay his respects. With these weighty, heartfelt words, the white-haired old artist left his final annotation of the lifelong kindness bestowed by his dearest friend. Behind these short sentence lay decades of meticulous care and unreserved mutual trust and sincerity, which forged the bond transcended the realm of art. It was Xu Beihong, who, as the newly appointed Dean of School of Art of the Peking University, stood alone against public opinion and tried multiple times to invite Qi Baishi to join the faculty. It was also Xu who stood firmly by Qi’s side, wholeheartedly appreciating his pioneering spirit, when his "Late-Life Transformation" faced ridicule from the art world. These acts of support gave rise to this precious collection spanning Qi’s entire career, with the warmth of the kindred spirits, leaving one of the most touching tales of friendship in modern Chinese art history. Today, under the title “Kindred Spirits,” we present this exhibition bringing together Qi Baishi’s masterpieces from the collection of the Xu Beihong Memorial Museum, supplemented by outstanding works from the Guangdong Museum collection, forming a relatively comprehensive ensemble. We hope these unparalleled collections will serve as a key to unfolding the full scope of Qi Baishi’s art—from grand landscapes to delicate insects and fish, from freehand brushwork to seal carving. We also look back on Xu Beihong as a discerning patron, bosom friend, collector, and global advocate, giving lifelong, unwavering support and vigorous promotion of Qi’s art. We seek to understand the spiritual resonance of “harmony in diversity” shared by these two artistic revolutionaries, as well as that fervent friendship that remains glowing across a century.
