Introduction
How can we respond, from the ground of our own cultural roots, to the spiritual reconstruction “after deconstruction” in the global contemporary art context? The exhibition The Excursion to Nanpi: Sublime of the Medium turns toward the profound intellectual traditions of East Asia, seeking to explore an alternative aesthetic path beyond Western rationalist logic through the contemporary transformation of Eastern philosophy.
The exhibition focuses on artists’ exploration of the “materiality” of media. Korean artists extend the tradition of Dansaekhwa (Korean monochrome painting), probing the metaphysical dimensions of time and existence through repetitive layering, scraping, and smearing of brushstrokes. Chinese artists, meanwhile, present a richer diversity of media expression, with themes ranging from reflections on civilization and nature to the translation of history and the sensitive rendering of personal memory. Art here neither directly engages with external issues nor retreats into a closed formal play. Instead, by questioning the nature of media and existence, it regains an autonomy and consciousness rooted in cultural identity.
This exhibition brings together works by 16 contemporary artists from China and Korea, spanning a variety of media including painting, sculpture, installation, and video. Through their creations, the artists collectively explore how to settle the mind and body in a digital age, and how to preserve cultural rootedness and spiritual depth in a globalized world, demonstrating the shift of East Asian art from a “participant” to a “proposer” with its own subjectivity.
We warmly invite you to experience, within the time and sensibility condensed in these works, the enduring and surging spirit of Eastern art that lies deep within the medium.
