Introduction
Zeng Daozong is a pre-eminent versatile artist in the history of contemporary Chinese art, who has created a series of brilliant Chinese colored ink-wash paintings, including thematic-painting, figure-painting and landscape-painting. Deeply touched by the poetic pastoral life on Qinghai plateau, Zeng created a large number of thematic paintings that narrate the colorful life of local Tibetan people. Distinguished from many contemporary artists, he not only presents the plots of the fascinating stories clearly, but also organizes the figures and formal elements into a visually pleasing composition. In this way, he innovatively integrates narration and formal beauty, assimilating modern Western art influences on the basis of traditional Oriental painting techniques.
Cherishing true affection for local ethnic people, Zeng has created many attractive figures in his artworks such as handsome horsemen, charming ladies and lovely children. All these graceful and cheerful figures in his paintings reflect the peaceful and serene atmosphere in contemporary China.Zeng Daozong is one of the most excellent and favorite students of Professor Guan Shanyue and Li Xiongcai, two renowned masters of Chinese landscape painting in the history of modern Chinese art. Besides thematic and figure painting, Zeng also creates numerous spectacular landscape paintings depicting grandeur plateaus, mountains and rivers in northwestern China. In terms of scenery in southern China, Zeng absorbs the techniques of modern Western painting to present its beauty, applying rich but elegant colors to depict the appealing flowers and vibrant plants.
Showcasing more than 100 pieces of works made by Zeng Daozong in more than 40 years since 1970s, the exhibition will be displayed at the Guangdong Museum of Art on Er-sha Island, which is composed of four units, “Spiritual Richness”, “Magnificent Landscapes”, “Beautiful Scenery” and “Biological Charm”. More than 10 pieces of the works in the exhibition are collection of the Guangdong Museum of Art. We believe that Zeng Daozong’s masterpieces enjoy important academic value for art historical and theoretical study, which will offer many precious inspirations for contemporary and future artistic creation in China.
