She graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam (2015–2019), majoring in Transformation Design.

The making of gambiered Canton silk is a slow process, completed in collaboration with nature. Silk is soaked in the deep crimson juice of shuliang (dioscorea cirrhosa); river mud is repeatedly applied to the surface of the fabric and then washed away. Light, humidity, and time introduce subtle variations along the way. Each act of pulling, drying, and folding is not merely a technical procedure, but a form of cooperation between human bodies and material.

What draws me in during the process is not only the delicate sheen of gambiered Canton silk, but those often-overlooked “in-between states.” Several workers lift and throw the cloth into the water together, its folds spreading like petals as it is stacked, forming asymmetrical structures; the uneven stains left by the dye on the workers’ sleeves. These seemingly “imperfect” moments speak more vividly of the true origin and atmosphere of gambiered Canton silk than the finished fabric itself.

The uniqueness of gambiered Canton silk lies not simply in its handmade nature, but in the mutual completion between humans and the natural world. The tannins in the dye penetrate the silk fibers; iron ions in the river mud react with them; sunlight and air intervene slowly, giving rise to a deep, subtly shimmering surface. The affective power of gambiered Canton silk does not reside in the moment it is perfectly laid out, but in the journey of being steamed, washed, sun-dried, and sealed.
