Introduction
Fan Yang is a renowned Chinese painter and calligrapher celebrated for his vigorous yet fluid brushwork, grand compositions, and poetic sensibility. His art inherits the lofty elegance of the Song and Yuan dynasties while integrating a distinctive contemporary awareness, establishing a unique presence in today’s field of ink painting. Throughout his long creative journey, Fan has consistently emphasized “learning from the ancients, guided by the heart.” Grounded in profound mastery of tradition and a sharp perception of the times, he infuses new vitality into Chinese painting—expressing the world and nature with spirited, living brushstrokes.
The Echoes of Tradition, Visions of Today: Fan Yang Art Exhibition will be grandly presented at the Guangdong Museum of Art (Baietan) in Halls 15, 16, and 17, from October 28, 2025, to January 18, 2026. This exhibition presents a selection of Fan Yang's finest works from the past two decades, showcasing the evolution of his artistic practice and vision. The title, Echoes of Tradition, Visions of Today, inspired by Laozi’s Dao De Jing, chapter 14: “Hold fast to the ancient Way to master the present” (trans. D. C. Lau, Penguin CLassics, 1963) encapsulating a profound principle—drawing on tradition while transforming it through contemporary insight. This concept lies at the heart of Fan Yang’s artistic vision: to forge the ancient into the new, expressing his inner spirit through the ink of today.
The exhibition unfolds across three thematic sections. Power and Grace: The Spirit of Motion, features a dynamic collection of sports-themed works inspired by the Tokyo Olympics, Beijing Winter Olympics, Paris Olympics, and FIFA World Cup in Qatar. With bold and fluid strokes, these paintings capture the vigor, motion, and spirit of contemporary athleticism. Worldly Echoes: Thus It Was Told, presents Fan’s Worldly Chronicles series with large-scale figure paintings alongside his Zen-inspired works and calligraphy pieces, revealing his observation and interpretation of human life through brush and ink. The final section, Dialogue with the Landscapes: Sketches from Life centers on his plein-air landscapes, showcasing his endeavor to “write a biography for the land” and to converse with nature through the mind’s tranquility.
