Introduction
拉丁美洲是一片融汇原住民文明、欧洲殖民文化、非洲黑奴遗产与亚洲移民印记的多元大陆，这种多元性早已内化为这片土地的深层文化基因。奥斯瓦尔多·维加斯是战后拉丁美洲最具活力与影响力的艺术家之一，更是委内瑞拉与巴黎战后前卫艺术圈之间的重要桥梁，他的艺术创作，既浸润于欧洲现代主义艺术思潮的滋养与启发，更深深扎根于拉美文明多元共生的文化传统。
维加斯早年读医, 之后弃医从艺。他通过对国家文化遗产的深入研究找到了自己的艺术语言，同时积极参与本地和国际的现代艺术发展, 他的理念扎根于两栖准则：游走于水陆两端，一边是远赴欧洲习得的现代艺术脉络，一边是深植美洲大地的本土历史根脉。他在具象与抽象、现代与史前之间，积极引导着故土的原始力量与文化记忆。
本次展览按时序分四个部分展开，涵盖维加斯横跨七十载的创作生涯，每个时期都展现了他非凡的创作视野，启示我们重新思考欧洲中心主义视角下的单一现代主义叙事及其所谓的“普世性”，探讨它如何被全球各地的艺术家接纳、转译，并在自身的文化传统中完成折射与再生。
South America is a continent shaped by the convergence of indigenous civilizations, European colonial culture, the legacy of African slavery, and the imprints of Asian migration. This multiplicity has long been internalized as the region’s deep-seated cultural DNA. Oswaldo Vigas was one of the most prominent postwar Latin American artists, and a strong artistic voice that bridged the postwar avant-garde art scenes between Venezuela and Paris; his work was profoundly rooted in the syncretic traditions of Latin America while drawing inspirations from European modernist currents.
A physician-turned-artist, Vigas found his artistic voice early on through in-depth studies of the cultural heritage of his country while also actively involved in modern art development both locally and internationally. His idea of modern art was rooted in an amphibian principle, straddling between water and land, the voyage to Europe and the grounding histories of the Americas. The artist moved freely between figuration and abstraction, the modern and prehistory, actively channeling the telluric forces and ancestral memories of his homeland.
This exhibition unfolds chronologically across four main periods of Vigas’s career spanning seven decades, each attests to the audacity of his creative vision, inviting a deeper inquiry into the singular narrative of modernism and its claims to universality, and how the influences were absorbed, adapted, translated by artists from different cultural backgrounds, and eventually were given new life to their own cultural traditions.
