Lacquer, as a material medium with millennia of historical continuity in East Asian civilization, embodies not only a tactile sensibility—its luster soft as jade and its surface imbued with quiet depth—but also a complex set of cultural, aesthetic, and symbolic values. Over the course of its evolution, lacquer has transcended its utilitarian and decorative functions to become a bearer of cosmological order, artisanal philosophy, and material poetics.

This exhibition, Beyond Objects: The Poetics and Reflections of Lacquer Art, undertakes a critical inquiry into the enduring dialectic between tradition and innovation within contemporary lacquer practices. Framed around this thematic axis, the curatorial project brings together the distinctive artistic trajectories of five contemporary practitioners—Tang Mingxiu, Xie Zhen, Zhang Wenzhi, Guo Xiaoyi, and Shi Pengcheng. Their diverse approaches and material vocabularies construct a multilayered discursive space, revealing the expanded possibilities of lacquer as a medium of contemporary artistic expression and cultural rearticulation.
