Introduction
"The Visible and the Invisible" encapsulates a central proposition in artist Chen Ling’s painting practice: rather than pursuing a direct representation of reality, he constructs a perceptual space on canvas through the interplay of color, structure, and rhythm. Familiar urban outlines and abstract configurations emerge and recede during the act of viewing, prompting the audience to reconsider questions such as how do we see, what do we see, and what is overlooked in the act of seeing. Chen’s work consistently establishes an open and dynamic system of interaction between image, perception, and existence.
This exhibition presents 40 pieces created by Chen Ling in recent years, spanning three major series: Abstraction, Abstract Landscapes, and Man and Nature. As a creator with a background in both architecture and art, Chen integrates a deep reflection on structural order and spatial perception into his painting. Through the logic of brushstrokes and the fluidity of color, he explores the “sense of structure” and “perceptual quality” inherent in the process of image formation.
More than a presentation of Chen Ling’s recent work, the exhibition seeks to explore the cultural roles and epistemological potential that painting may assume in a contemporary context. Guangdong Museum of Art remains committed to supporting artistic practices with a spirit of inquiry, advancing contemporary painting into more rigorous academic discourse, and continuously expanding the boundaries of understanding within Chinese contemporary art.
