Introduction

"The Universe from Within: Solo Exhibition of Zeng Mi" is the first major solo exhibition in the Lingnan region for Zeng Mi, an artist who grew up, studied art, and spent decades creating in the Jiangzhe (Jiangsu and Zhejiang) region. Featuring nearly 100 works (and sets of works), the exhibition traces his decades-long journey of ink-and-wash creation, reflecting on his extensive exploration spanning traditional brushwork, lived experience, and personal perception. As a key artist in the modern transformation of Chinese painting since the 1980s, Zeng Mi has rooted his practice in regional cultural lineage and life sketching. Rather than seeking modernity through a detachment from tradition, he continuously probes the linguistic possibilities of Chinese painting itself at the intersection of brushwork, composition, and calligraphic writing.

The exhibition is structured into four sections: "Roaming through Hills and Valleys," "Leisures of the Mortal World," "Expressions of a Calligraphic Heart," and "Returning to the Undifferentiated Truth." Corresponding to landscapes, flowers-and-birds with figures, calligraphy, and his late works along with his creative world, these sections present the multifaceted faces of his artistic language—from brushwork landscapes and everyday pleasures to calligraphic practice—allowing painting, writing, thought, and life experience to illuminate one another.

Presenting Mr. Zeng Mi within the Lingnan artistic context places a modern trajectory of Chinese painting—distinct from that of the Lingnan experience—directly into Guangdong's art history scene for comparative viewing. Both paths point toward an ongoing question: how traditional Chinese painting can remain open within modern history and continually yield new possibilities.
