Introduction

The Guangdong Museum of Art will soon present a retrospective exhibition of Li Jinming's artistic career. Having spent much of his life by the sea and harbour, Li Jinming has always perceived the world through colour. Over nearly seven decades, he has pursued a path of “freehand oil painting” – blending the luminosity of Impressionism with the calligraphic brushwork of traditional Chinese ink to create a language that is both warm and powerful. His brush travels freely between the glimmering fishing ports and the rhythms of everyday life, capturing not only the vibrant energy of coastal Guangdong, but also the quiet lives of ordinary people amid a changing era.

This exhibition presents twenty works donated by the artist, alongside over fifty representative pieces and archival materials from different periods, organised into four sections: Harbour and Boats; People and Era; Travel and Landscape; and Homeland and Life. Titled Boundless Sea, Endless Sky , the exhibition looks back at the distinctive natural and human landscapes of the South China coast, while tracing how one artist, through sustained and attentive observation, has situated his personal expression within an ever-shifting historical context, thereby building a vision that is both expansive and warmly humane.
