Introduction

“I have experienced a lot of darkness in my life, but the Heavens have given me the darkness so that I could understand where the light is. There is no darkness in this world, there is only light; it is up to us whether we see it.” — Hsiao Chin
"Light" is a symbolic element that runs through Hsiao Chin's over seven-decade-long creative career, becoming an intention in his works that eulogizes life and pays tribute to cosmic energy. Since the theme of cosmic energy presented during the Punto Movement period in Milan in the 1960s, where the small self and the big self merge into one; the death of his daughter Samantha in the 1990s became a turning point in Hsiao Chin's artistic career and also an opportunity for the philosophical sublimation of the light of hope. In the "Samsara Series", he uses ink to layer upon layer of circular structures, symbolizing that life eternally flows in the universe like ripples; in the "Bright Light Series", gold and cobalt blue intertwine to form nebula-like color fields. Here, the Buddhist concept of "Nirvana" collides with the "energy field" in quantum physics, transmuting his personal grief of losing a loved one into a metaphysical pursuit of eternal light. These works are no longer simple lyricism but construct a spiritual topology of "grief - transformation - rebirth", using visual language to interpret the "constancy" within "impermanence". Hsiao Chin emitted magnificent light in the darkest and most mysterious realms of life, demonstrating his understanding of "hope".

To commemorate the 90th anniversary of Hsiao Chin's birth, the Guangdong Museum of Art, and the Hsiao Chin Art Foundation and the 3812 Gallery jointly organize the "The Light of Hope - Hsiao Chin 90th Anniversary Retrospective Exhibition." This exhibition is dedicated to honoring this pioneer in modern abstract art. As an important writer of contemporary art history, Mr. Hsiao Chin has always regarded art as a healing carrier for human spiritual trauma and a core bond for civilizational dialogue. The Guangdong Museum of Art will continue to be committed to constructing a contemporary paradigm for art history research. Taking Mr. Hsiao Chin's artistic practice as a mirror, it will explore the future possibilities of Eastern abstract art in the context of globalization, so that the spiritual brilliance contained in Mr. Hsiao Chin's works can bloom with new vitality in the interweaving of the contemporary era and the future.
