“The Unseen” of the 4th Guangzhou Triennial

On March 3rd, the news conference of the theme exhibition of the 4th Guangzhou Triennial was held in Guangdong Museum of Art. The curators of exhibition, Jiang Jiehong and Jonathan Watkins, delegate of artists, Susan Philipsz, and other honored guests showed in the conference.

This exhibition is entitled “the Unseen”, a phrase that is straightforward despite its suggestion of obscurity. In Chinese, it can be translated as jian suo wei jian literally, which means ‘to see the unseen’. The Unseen refers to the limitations of our sensory organs, the narrow confines of human perception on the one hand; on the other, paradoxically, it gives rise to observations that transcend familiar experience.

The curator Jiang Jiehong explained: “when practice leads the way, what sort of exhibition, artists and form can we have. This is the purpose of our exhibition.”

Visually-led thinking, practice and reading have established a platform for artists and audiences. This theme exhibition aims to sublimate and conclude the inauguration exhibition and project exhibitions, raising the bar for the triennial.

Chief curator of the 4th Guangzhou Triennial, Luo Yiping added, “It is not just a sublimation or conclusion. We hope to further extend the ideas shown in the inauguration exhibition and project exhibitions. The theme exhibition is essential to this edition of Guangzhou Triennial. Hopefully when this exhibition ends, a higher standard of the triennial is set.”
The Theme Exhibition of the 4th Guangzhou Triennial will run from September 28th to December 16th.
