Initiated in 1984, the triennial Guangdong Art Festival is hosted by Department of Culture of Guangdong Province. It’s a professional art festival of the highest level in Guangdong Province and a provincial art festival with the longest history in China. With the support of provincial government and higher authorities, Guangdong Art Festival has been successfully held on 12 occasions. Since the last Guangdong Art Festival, the Exhibition of Outstanding Artworks has been added as a new session by Department of Culture of Guangdong Province, in a bid to highlight the latest outstanding achievements of contemporary Lingnan fine arts, the inheritance, innovation and development of the Chinese culture in the contemporary era, as well as the distinctive features and styles of the Chinese culture. The Exhibition of Outstanding Artworks is held simultaneously with Guangdong Art Festival. Thanks to the joint efforts of various departments and local authorities, the Exhibition of Outstanding Artworks has developed into a comprehensive and authoritative government project of Guangdong Province. We aim to tell the stories of Guangdong Province and Lingnan art through art creation, enhance the originality of art through exchanges, stimulate creativity in art, and elevate the art creation in Guangdong Province to a new height.

The exhibits consist of two categories. The first category of works are collected by Departments of Culture, Radio, Film, TV, Press and Publication (Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau) above the prefecture-level and submitted to Department of Culture of Guangdong Province. After multiple rounds of reviews and evaluations by experts, 181 pieces of works were selected for the exhibition, including 5 pieces of Gold Award, 11 pieces of Silver Award, 15 pieces of Bronze Award, and 25 pieces of Excellence Award. The second category of works are recommended by famous artists, giving prominence to the sense of responsibility and independent thinking of Guangdong artists at different times in terms of lofty spirit, historic feelings and social concerns. They’ve been committed to people-oriented art creation by going deep among the masses and into the thick of life. They’ve created the most affectionate art works with heart and soul.
