“History & Status-quo”—First Youth Art Theory Review Meeting and Seminar Held at the Guangdong Museum of Art

Entry Time: 2017-11-15

“History & Status-quo”—First Youth Art Theory Review Meeting and Seminar was held at the Guangdong Museum of Art on November 9-10, 2017. The event is jointly hosted by China Artists Association and Guangdong Federation of Literary and Art Circles, organized by the art theory committee of China Artists Association, Guangdong Museum of Art and Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, and co-organized by Guangdong Art Museum Association.

The event was chaired by Mr. Shang Hui, Deputy Director of Art Theory Committee of China Artists Association and President and Editor in Chief of the Art Magazine. Mr. Xu Li who’s Party Secretary, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of China Artists Association, Mr. Xu Qinsong who’s Vice Chairman of China Artists Association, Chairman of Guangdong Federation of Literary and Art Circles and President of Guangdong Art Institute, and Mr. Wang Shaoqiang who’s Vice Chairman of Guangdong Artists Association, Director of Guangdong Museum of Art and Executive Vice President of Guangdong Art Museum Association delivered speeches respectively.

Mr. Xu Li said in his speech that theory and creation are the wings of art. The prosperity of art relies on inspiring works as well as art theories that guide art creation. Young scholars are the reserve forces that play a key role in the Chinese art theory development. They not only exert influence on the development of the Chinese art in the future, but constitute the most sensitive, the most thoughtful and the best qualified participants of the contemporary art development home and abroad. That’s why China Artists Association is full of anticipation in cultivating young art theorists with a high level of cultural awareness.

Mr. Xu Qinsong believes that as long as young theorists take the historic responsibility, critically examine themselves and set strict demands on themselves, they are surely to create great literature and rare textual materials for the contemporary art history and promote the academic development of art. He expressed his hope that the Youth Art Theory Review and Seminar will continue in future and develop into a national theory brand of China Artists Association, in a bid to provide young theorists with more opportunities to show their talents and contribute their part to the development of art theory research in China.

In his speech, Mr. Wang Shaoqiang said that we care about young people’s thoughts, creative ecology and research. We hope to create a better environment for their growth. The “History & Status-quo”—First Youth Art Theory Review Meeting and Seminar has a great significance to recognize and encourage the work of young theorists and to exert more extensive influence on the academic future of the art.

Outstanding Paper Award was then presented to 21 young art theorists, including Yu Yang, Zhao Kun, He Xuan, Liu Jiashuai, Shen Ying, Zhou Shanyi, Zhang Changhong, Yu Guanchao, Peng Fei, Zhao Yanzhe, Wang Zhaoyu, Chen Du, Sun Lin, Shao Liang, Li Changju, Qian Lei, Wang Jinxia, Niu Le, and others.

Following the award ceremony, Professor Xue Yongnian, Director of Art Theory Committee of China Artists Association and Professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Liberal Arts of China Central Academy of Fine Arts, delivered a keynote speech on “Idea Innovation, Cultural Confidence and Proposals for Chinese Art—To the First Youth Art Forum”. Mr. Li Jingkun, Vice Chairman of Guangdong Federation of Literary and Art Circle, Chairman of Guangdong Artists Association and President of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, delivered a keynote speech on “History & Status-quo—Chinese Paintings in Guangdong Province in the 20th Century”. Mr. Liang Jiang, Deputy Director of Art Theory Committee of China Artists Association and President of Modern and Contemporary Art Institute of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, delivered a keynote speech on “Random Thoughts on Academic Learning and Methods”.

Professor Xue Yongnian agrees with Mr. Xu Li on that young scholars are the reserve forces that play a key role in the Chinese art theory development. They not only exert influence on the development of the Chinese art in the future, but constitute the most sensitive, the most thoughtful and the best qualified participants of the contemporary art development home and abroad. Therefore, it’s of great cultural significance to convene series of conferences on art theory, build a high-end seminar platform for young scholars, and encourage more relevant academic exchanges and seminars.

The event finally came through after two years of meticulous planning and adequate preparations. To guarantee the papers’ quality and work efficiency, the organizing committee decided in May 2015 to combine recommendation with appraisal and selection. Members of the Art Theory Committee of China Artists Association, provincial, municipal or regional artists associations, and art institutions of higher learning are qualified to recommend papers that have been published over the past five years by young scholars of less than 45 years old. Recommenders shall fill in the recommendation form, provide information about the author like organization, job title, expertise and previous awards, and write a comment of 300 to 500 characters to serve as the reference for appraisal and selection.

By the deadline for recommendation in December 2015, a total of 164 papers were submitted and 116 of them were selected for final review. Then, the review group composed of 12 famous experts selected 106 papers to be included in “History & Status-quo—First Youth Art Theory Review Meeting and Seminar Proceedings”.

The selected papers not only cover the topics of art history home and abroad, art theory, art status-quo and art criticism, but also broaden the horizon and open up new fields for research. They attach importance to inter- and cross-disciplinary issues, pay attention to cultural exchanges and influences, and discuss such topics like national image, new media context, eco-environment protection, intellectual property right, folk artists, and art foundations.
