After months of preparation and discussion, the
Third Guangzhou Triennial will be open from 6th September. Inaugurated in 2002
by The Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou, The Guangzhou Triennial is considered
to be one of the most experimental and progressive international art events to
be held in China. The exhibition is an excellent example of the history and
unique characteristics of contemporary art within Guangdong province. It also
continues to build upon the reputation of local culture, as well as introducing
the differences between art in Guangdong and that of other creative cities such
as Beijing and Shanghai, etc.
The central theme for this
year’s triennial is “Farewell to Post-colonialism.” The two-month triennial has
attracted more than 100 artists and talented curators such as Gao Shiming, Sarat
Maharaj and Johnson Chang Tsong-zung. It should be noted that, although the word
‘farewell’ is significant in terms of rebellious reaction, the triennial itself
intends to be a rational reflection on the daily inflexibility of a
Post-colonial system. The Triennial is certain to become one of the most
interesting, and avant-garde art events in China’s 2008 calendar, and of course
a unique cultural experience which symbolizes Guangdong’s artistic identity.
