The artworks which form the exhibition have been produced by artists and children who have severe disabilities, and who are from Frankfurt and Guangzhou. This exhibition comprises of four parts of artworks, the first part which originate from Atelier Goldstein in Germany. Giving a broader view of the Goldstein Artists, these artworks reflect the obsessive, cautious, playful, painstaking, graceful and ponderous nature of the artists themselves and their illnesses. Showing the diversity of materials used and themes explored, the viewer can begin to understand more about the unbelievable minds behind the Goldstein work. The artworks of these artists are all uniquely different, for each artist has their own distinct ideas and voice.
The second part of artworks are from Guangzhou Disabled Person’s Service Institution is particularly impressive. Through their works we can learn more about simple pleasures. Their love of drawing on rice paper with inky fingers can be seen as symbols of purity and freedom in a world which for them is merely made up of black and white. We can understand their sense of love and hate in a world of color. We can understand their care and concentration, through their obsession for drawing stroke by stroke.
The third part which represents the theme “Peace, harmonious, blend and Develop” is from a special center at the Children’s Palace. We hope the encouragement of self expression and exploration through these artworks, to open a window of communication with the outside world, which in turn will build confidence and courage. For every child is equal
The fourth part is some collaborative pieces which have been created between several artists and children from Frankfurt and Guangzhou. Though the artists and children could not communicate easily with their friends in the other city, they found common ground through ideas and personal feelings.
This exhibition serves as outlet for the personal and creative activities of German and Chinese artists and children, who have a range of disabilities. In showing these art works, the Guangdong Museum of Art hopes to encourage everyone to enhance the positive attention that should be given to people with disabilities.
